We give hereunder six horoscopes (birth-charts) to illustrate our explanations. We showed the positions of planets Moon, Mars and Venus and birth lagnam only. We also showed other planets which are in association (staying in the same house) with lagnam, Moon, Mars and Venus. We specified clearly, in each case, the nature of Kuja-dosham : is it from birth house (lagnam / ASC) or from Moon’s house (raasi) or from Venus’ house.

The houses (bhaavas) 1,2,4,7,8,12 from Lagnam in the horoscope (birth chart) of B and G denote the following aspects. (a) 1. Lagnam is thanu-bhaavam (house of body). So lagnam denotes the health, sturdiness of body, appearance, and nature of the person. (b) 2^nd house from Lagnam explains the family, happiness in home, riches and money, talking power, eyes, and death of the person. © 4^th house from Lagnam gives information about the person’s education, own house, mother, car (vehicle), lands, and conjugal happiness. (d) the 7^th house from lagnam tells about the person’s spouse, mutual love and affection among the married couple, their health, lust, prostitution (adultery), sperm, ovum and death of the person (maarakam). (e) the 8^th house tells about the person’s longevity, and life-style.(f) the 12^th house from lagnam tells about expenditure, waste, characteristics / qualities, sexual happiness, losses, fame and moksham (liberation).

Now we explain briefly what is Kuja-dosham in the horoscopes of B and G:

It is stated in Astrological texts, that the horoscope (birth chart) of a person has Kuja-dosham (defective disposition of Mars) if Mars is present in one of the following houses 1,2,4,7,8,12 counted from the house of birth (ascendant) and the house of Moon (rasi) and the house of Venus (Sukra). It is described as follows: LAGNAM (BIRTH HOUSE) is denoted as body; MOON is denoted as mind; SUKRA is deemed as giver of spouse & marriage causing planet. It is described in ancient Sanskrit text MUHOORTHA-CHINTHAMANI* : slokam : LAGNAE VYAYAECHA, PAATHALAE, JAMITHRAECHA, ASHTAMAE KUJAE STHREENAAM HARTHRU VINASAAYA: PUMSAA BHARYA VINASANAM; The famous ancient Saint-Astrologer Sri Agashtya Maharshi wrote in his text on Astrology, *AGASHTYA SAMHITHA; “ DHANAE , VYAYEACHA, PAATHALAE, JAMITHRECHA, ASHTAMAE KUJA STHITHU, KUJA-DOSHAMUCHYATHAE”; The malefic-effect of Mars is strongest (100%) when Mars is positioned in 1,2,4,7,8,12 houses from the house of Venus (Sukra); the malefic-effect of Mars is very strong (about 75%) when Mars is positioned in 1,2,4,7,8,12 houses from the house of Moon: the ill-effect of Mars is moderately strong (about 66%)when Mars is positioned in 1,2,4,7,8,12 houses from the house of birth (Janma-lagnam= ascendant). But 75% of the general astrologer are quacks and do not possess the depth of knowledge and experience in Astrology; so they explain the Kuja dosham taking the moon-position or lagnam as the starting point to count; this is not at all correct in our opinion. We must take the position of Venus (Sukra) as the reference house, because Sukra is the ruling planet for conjugal life and marriage. Kuja Dosham-Malefic disposition of Mars

Part—2 (August—11—2008)

The nature of Mars (Kuja) is fire. He is deemed to be malefic. He is the lord of two houses in the Zodiac, namely Mesham (Aries) and Vruschikam (Scorpio); Makaram (Capricorn) is house of exaltation (Utach) and Karkatakam (Cancer) is the house of debilitation for Mars. Budha (Mercury) is enemy to Kuja (Mars). Ravi (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Guru (Jupiter) are friends to Mars (Kuja; Mangala); Sani (Saturn) and Sukra (Venus) are neutrals (neither friend nor enemy) to Mars. But Mars is enemy to Saturn. Mars is neutral to Raahu and Kethu. Venus and Mars are mutually neutrals. Sun and Mars are mutually friends. Mars is neutral to Moon. Mars and Jupiter are mutual friends. Mars has retrograde (vakra-gathi) motion and also stand-still (sthambhana) state. Due to this stand-still characteristic Mars (Kuja) can stay in a house (rasi) for more period than is usually destined).
If Mars (Kuja) is ill-disposed in any horoscope, some remedies are prescribed in Hindu astrology. (1) Recite (Japam) of Sri Subrahmanya manthra 108 times thrice a day. Perform milk abhisheka and ashtothara puja to Lord Sri Subrahmaneswara on one Tuesday every month. Do japam (recitation) of Kuja sthothra manthra 7,000 times every month during Kuja periods.

2) You can chant the following mantra for Kuja dosha nivaaranam, 108 times daily, during the malefic periods of Mars: "Om Namo Mangale, Mangala-adhaare, Maangalye, mangala-pradhe, Mangala-artham, mangaleshi, sou-maangalyam che dehi me; aayu, arogya, aiswaryam dehime dhiyam !"
(3) Wear a gold ring with a coral (pagadam) to the left hand ring finger (anamika).
(4) Give (alms-offering) daanam 7 lbs. of redgram (Kandulu; toor daal) to a temple-priest / purhohit / Brahmin ; the sincere practice of these three remedical measures can reduce the ill-effects. Malefic Disposition of Mars (Kuja Dosham) in the Horoscopes of the Bride and Groom

Hindu astrology is universal and successfully predicted the fates of people for over ten thousands of years. Many people who believe astrology, seriously take into consideration whether the bride and or groom have any Kuja (Mangala) Dosham {malefic disposition of Mars} in their horoscopes. This aspect is widely discussed all over India and also by persons of Indian origin settled abroad. They go to consult astrologers; many of the astrologers are not qualified and they do not have the depth of knowledge; such astrologers can not give correct advice. Also this problem of Kuja dosham (malefic disposition of Mars in the horoscope) is intricate and requires very careful assessment. I prepare this article to highlight the concepts properly, so that the readers are benefited by the clarifications.

Part—1 (Augus—10—2008)

Let us consider two teenagers who like to get married; the girl is (say) G and the boy is (say) B. Marriage is a social event of utmost importance and is above religion, caste, creed, nationality and such aspects; it is advisable to examine the horoscopes of both G and B and assess compatibility of both horoscopes before finalizing their marriage. While assessing the compatibility we have to examine the aspects pertaining to Kuja (Mars), Sukra (Venus) and Chandra (Moon). Mars (Kuja) is the planet which influences the sperm in males; Sukra (Venus) is the planet which influences the ovum in females; and moon causes sexual desire in the couple and urges them to copulate; he acts strongly on the minds of the couple. So these three planets Mars, Venus and Moon play vital role in the married life of B and G; and in general in all humans. Besides the presiding planet of marriage and conjugal life is Venus (Sukra). So the conjugal life of married couple is ruled by Mars; he can make their conjugal life enjoyable or miserable. Kala Sarpa yoga in the horoscope

(August—09—2008) Cancellation of Kaalsarpa Dosha :

Some astrologers believe if a plant joins either Rahu or Ketu in any house then this yoga gets cancelled. This is true irrespective of the degrees of the joining planet in the house of Rahu or Ketu. Example: . let’s assume all the planets are between Rahu and Ketu, but Rahu is conjunct with Venus. Let us further assume that the Rahu is at 12 degress and Venus is at 23, degrees. Now from astronomy perspective, Venus still lies between Rahu and Ketu, but from some Vedic astrologers perspective the yoga gets cancelled. I personally do not support this belief; in the natal chart of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Ketu is conjunct with Jupiter; but he suffered the malefic effects of Kala-sarpa dosha in his life.

REMEDIAL MEASURES

1. Japam has to be performed separately for Kuja, Rahu and Ketu regularly, all the life.

2. If you are in Tamilnadu, visit Rahu Temple situated in Tamilnadu Tirunageswram and perform milk abishekam in Rahukalam; after performing this, visit Vaideeswaran koyal (Kuja Temple) and then Ketu temple in Peroambare and perform pooja.

3. If you are in Andhra Pradesh, it is advisable to visit Srikalahasti temple and perform pooja for Kala-sarpa Dosha Nivarana and perform Pooja to Goddess Gyana Prasunamba with kumkum.

4. Those who are not financially sound may perform pooja to Lord Subramaneswara at nearest Swami temple for at least 7 Tuesdays, once every year.

5. A ring is made of silver in the form of Sarpa and wear the ring to the pointing finger.

6 You may contact the purohits (priests) in any one of the 12 jyothir-linga temples or the pancha-bhoota linga temples for performing remedies (santis) inside the temple-precincts. If the person is not financially sound to go to any of these temples, he/ she can do the santhis with devotion and faith in the precincts of local / nearest temple of Lord Siva / Subrahmanya Swami

7. Wear Gomedika or Vaiduryam (cats eye) in a ring made of silver and wear the ring to middle finger.

8. Naga padaga (hood of serpent) is made of silver and donate (daanama) it to a Brahmin in Lord Siva’s temple after performing Ekadasa Rudrabhishekam to reduce negative effects due to Kalasarpa dosham. (concluded)================

(August—08---2008) Assessing the effects of Kala Sarpa Dosha :

This yoga is not always maelefic; the astrologer must carefully analyse the natal chart of the person and find out the degree of malefic effect, the yoga can cause; this requires great depth of knowledge and decades of experience for the astrologer. Just finding one of the 12 combinations described above does not mean that the native will undergo the experience of malefic results described above. The entire chart needs to be analyzed carefully in order to come to a conclusion. In my experience of over 4 decades, the following factors are to be considered.

1. The overall strength of the natal chart is to be assessed by looking at birth-lagna, Lagna lord, Moon and Sun. If the chart is strong as a whole, this will not allow the kaal sarpa yoga to do any major harm to the native. A weak chart can cause the person heavy harm and loss..

2. Based on the Rahu/Ketu position, determine to which side of the axis all planets lie. All the houses of the side which is totally empty will show the effects of this yoga. The houses in which Rahu/Ketu stay will particularly determine the area of life which will be effected beatively.

3. However if the lords of the houses arranged on the empty side of the Rahu/Ketu are very well disposed (exalted, in friend’s house, in own house, seeing (aspecting) their own house). then these houses will not cause that much damage and the malefic effect will be reduced due to the factors attributed to these houses.

4. Vasuki, Padam, Mahapadam, Shankachood and Vishdhar Kaalsarpa generally do not give malefic effects if the overall chart is in a really weak and is in bad shape. This is due to their association with 3rd, 6th and 11th house in which Rahu/Ketu are deemed to be beneficial.

5. If in Nava-amsa chart Rahu/Ketu fall in 3rd, 6th or 11th house, then the malefic effects are much reduced.

6. Find out the houses (constellations) of Rahu/Ketu as well. If they stay in benefic houses (if the lords are natural benefic planets) then they become more malefic.

7. Its malefic effect will be more prominent during dasha and antardasha periods of Rahu and Ketu. This is very important point to be noted. If this yoga is very strong and malefic in a person’s chart, but the dasha does not occur till very late in his life, then it really does not harm the native that severely..

8. It causes serious damage and hardships when related with Sun and Saturn or the related with the lords of the houses occupied by Sun or Saturn. (to be continued tomorrow) ========

If in the natal chart of a person :

1. If Rahu or Ketu is in 8th house from Ravi (Sun), it is termed as Sarpa Dosha.

2. If Rahu or Ketu is in 8h house from Chandra (m00n), it is termed as Sarpa Dosha

3. If Rahu is in the 6^th, 7^th or 8^th house from birth hose, lagnam (ASD), in the natal chart of a person, it is Sarpa Dosha.

4. If either Rahu or Ketu is placed in Trikona,(1,5 or 9^th houses) from birth lagnam of a person, it is Sarpa dosha.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF KALA SARPA YOGAMS

1.If all the planets are (Ravi,Chandra,Kuja,Budha,Guru,Sukra and Sani) are placed between Rahu and Ketu, from birth lagnam, it is known as Ananta Kala Sarpa Dosham.
EFFECTS: Troubles in family life, and chronic health problems.

2. If all the planets are placed from the 2^nd house to 8^th house from lagnam, it is known as GULIKA KALASARPA DOSHAM EFFECTS: Financial and domestic troubles.

3. If all the planets occupy from third house to ninth house, from lagnam, it is known as VASUKI KALA SARPA DOSHAM. EFFECTS: Problems with brothers and sisters

4.If all the planets stay from fourth house to tenth house, from lagnam, it is known as SANKAPALA KALA SARPA DOSHAM. EFFECTS; Problems with mother, vehicles and at residence and properties.

5. If all the planets occupy from fifth house to eleventh house, from lagnam, it is known as PADMAKALA SARPA YOGAM. EFFECTS: Problems with spouse/husband and with children.

6.If all the planets stay in sixth house to twelfth house from lagnam, it is known as MAHA PADMA KALA SARPA DOSHAM. EFFECTS: Health problems, debts, problems due to enemies.

7. If all the planets stay in seventh house to birth-lagnam, it is known as TAKSHAKA KALA SARPA YOGAM. EFFECTS: Loss in business and problems / ruining of matrimonial life.

8. If all the planets stay in eight house to second house from lagnam, it is known as KARKOTAKA KALA SARPA YOGAM. EFFECTS: Problems with wife and injuries or loss of limbs in accidents.

9. If all the planets stay in ninth house to third house, from lagnam, it is known as SANKACHOODA KALA SARPA YOGAM. EFFECTS: Problems with father, heavy bad luck etc.,

10. From tenth house to fourth house, it is known as GHATAKA KALA SARPA YOGAM.
EFFECTS: Problem in business and job fonts.

11. From eleventh house to fifth house, it it known as VISHADHARA KALA SARPA YOGAM.
EFFECTS:: Problems in financial business terms.

12. From twelfth house to sixth house, it is known as SESHANAGA KALA SARPA YOGAM.

Rahu-Ketu axis favors rise in mundane life while Ketu-Rahu axis indicates elevation in spiritual matters. It is also found that Kala-sarpa Yoga natives get betrayed by trusted friends and even relatives. Suffering due to developments in life strengthens the mind and mellows one's outlook. This is a blessing of Kala-sarpa Yoga." I agree with his opinion that a person seasoned with challenges in life can acquire the grit and effort and strive to overcome the obstacles and attain success and high achievements, as in the case of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Ordinary persons may be crushed down by the malefic effects of Kala-sarpa-dosha; I saw such persons in my life. This is the horoscope of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru; first Prime Minister of India. Moon is in his own house in birth lagnam; Cancer; he is royal & has strong personality& diplomacy; he has lot of receptivity, compassion, flexibility or adjustability and has ability to understand other's problems and feelings. He is a visionary and loved India; he is, in fact, the architect of modern India. Saturn in 2^nd house and Jupiter in 6^th house made him a great Orator. Jupiter is in his own house, in 6^th house; he conquered his enemies and carved out his career and achieved greatness by his self-effort only. Venus is in his own house (Kendram; 4^th ) and is conjunct with Mercury. This gave him high level of education and qualities of a great genius and writer of renowned books, which prove his profound knowledge & scholarship and true perspective of history and culture of India (Pandit).

Kaal Sarp Yoga : Nehru is deemed to have Kaal Sarp Dosha in his birth-chart, This Yoga is formed when all planets are between Rahu and Ketu. Later, we also found details of Ardh Kaal Sarp Yoga, Partial Kaal Sarp Yoga and so on, which as per our view is of no use. some astrologers believe that if this Yoga is formed between Rahu and Ketu it is Kaal Sarpa Dosha (malefic) and if it is formed between Ketu and Rahu, it is 'Kala Sarp Yoga' (beneficial).. Controversies apart, here we offer a simple explanation to this. Kaal Sarp Yoga is formed when all planets are between Rahu and Ketu. Rahu is a 'Chhaya Graha' or 'Tamas' has negative effect over the chart, if this Yoga is formed. Rahu is mouth and Ketu is Tail. In Jawaharlal Nehru's birth chart, Jupiter is conjunct with Ketu; Jupiter is at 15 degrees in Sagittatius and Ketu is at 12 degree in the same house. so as it is, Ketu will move backward and will not cross Jupiter's degree. More over Rahu does not cross any planet in his chart thus Kaal Sarpa dosham is not formed, as per the view of some astrologers. So Nehru did not have any dosham (malefic effect) which retarded his glory or great yogams in his life, they say.

But in our opinion he did not enjoy his prime years of life. His wife was ill for years and she finally died. For about 3 decades, he dedicated his life for independence struggle; he was one of the key-persons in that fight. He spent several years in prisons. He underwent severe troubles; later his tenure as prime minister of India was not a carpet of roses; he always had mental tensions due to Pakistan’s aggressions, and Chinese’s aggression on India and international unrest due to cold-war problems. He suffered mental agony due to Chinese betrayal and cruel aggression. He finally had brain hemorrhage in Simla and died. All this, in our opinion, is due to Kala-sarpa dosham’s malefic effect. (August—04—2008) Savya Kala Sarpa Dosham: All the houses are occupied with the 7 planets from Rahu to Ketu , it is known as Savya Kalasarpa Dosham

Apasavya Kala Sarpa Dosham : All the houses are filled with the 7 planets from Ketu to Rahu, it is called Apasavya Kala Sarpa Dosham.

In Astrological science, Rahu is termed as the Head and Ketu is termed as tail of Sarpa. The Vedic pundits terms that the Kalasarpa dosham / yogam is most dangerous one in anyones life span. It ruins his life career, health and wealth and reputation.
In the natal chart from lagna to seventh house if this yoga is there, the first half is more miserable and from seventh house to twelfth house, the second half of the life is harmful. In the natal chart if other beneficial yogas are not there, the native will be jobless; addicted to bad habits, and leads miserable life, unmarried, etc. Note : Good and very strong raja-yogams benefit the person, even if he has Sarpa dosham in his chart. There are some rules: (1) If Jupiter or Mercury stay in lagnam or aarudha lagnam, favourably disposed; or (2) If Jupiter or Mercury stay in 10^th house from lagnam or aarudha lagnam favourably disposed; or (3) If the lord of 10^th house from laganam or aarudha laganam is beneficial planet and is together with Jupiter or Mercury or in between Jupiter or Mercury; or (4) If Guru and Mercury aspect lagnam or lord of lagnam or aarudha lagnam or the lord of aarudha lagnam, then the person will be an expert astrologer and earns his living by practice of astrology. Let us examine the horoscope of this astrologer in the light of the above rules. (1) Jupiter is exalted and aspects (7^th house) the birth lagnam. & (2) Mercury is exulted and is in aarudha lagnam. & (3)The lord of 10^th house (Virgo) is Venus and is positioned between Jupiter and Mercury. & (4) Jupiter and Mercury are bestowers of success in the profession of astrology; both are exalted. Sri Narayana Bhatt, a noted astrologer of 5^th century (A.C) of Ujjaini, examined the various aspects of Kala-sarpa dosha. We explain Kalasarpa dosha based on his writings and on our observation of various horoscopes during the past 45 years.
If in any native's chart, Rahu and Ketu and all the 7 planets stay in the 7 houses, between Rahu and Ketu it is called Kalasarpa dosha.. Samastha grahanaam Rahu, Kethu Madhya-gathe, Kaala-sarpa doshamuchyathe example :

Rahu and Ketu are the vedic names for the ascending and descending nodes of the Moon respectively. The Sanskrit word kala has several meanings, one of which is “time.” Sarpa can be translated loosely as “snake / serpent.” Kalasarpa dosha is a phenomenon in which the serpentine energy associated with Rahu and Ketu entwines itself around the other 7 planets, thereby constrictive and disruptive the planetary rays which show vital influence on the person’s life.

Kalasarpa dosha can bring challenges to one’s finances, health and property. In addition, Kalasarpa dosha causes delays and obstructions in the person’s daily life, making it difficult for him to accomplish anything. Birth lagnam, Indu-lagnam and Aarudha-lagnam; all these 3 fall in Leo (Simha) house is good.

1. Ravi and Budha are in same house, gives Budha aaditya yoga. This gives the person, hale and healty life and sturdy body and Budha gives prosperity and success in business and he enjoys royal luxuries.

2. Gaja-kesari yogoyam, Chandra kendre Bruhaspathihi, Kesari yoga sanjatho, satham-aayur, raja-yogam, na samsayaha = Moon and Jupiter are in mutually in 7^th houses and aspect each other. This is Gaja-kesari yogam, this gives the person healthy and happy life, and high level of prosperity. He enjoys long life span and gets high level of education. He gains name and fame.

3. Adhi yogam : If there are benefic planets in 6^th, 7^th, and or 8^th house, from the house of Moon, the person is prosperous, and gains name and fame. Sukra is in 6^th house and Guru and Budha are in 7^th house. So he enjoys royal comforts all his life.

4. Lagna-adhi yogam : If Jupiter or Venus are associated with Mercury in the 6^th ,7th or 8th houses or if they are spread out in these three houses without any malefic association, a very beneficial yoga known as Lagnadhi yoga is formed, the effects of which are as under :- "The person born under the Lagnadhi yoga will become a minister, a commander or a ruler (of a District or Province). He will have one wife only, will be well-behaved, long-lived, virtuous and without foes.

5. Longevity : Saturn (the signficator of aayu, logevity) is in upachaya (11^th house; laabham) in friend‘s house; the lord of 8^th house (aayu-sthana) is Jupiter and is in 7^th house (kendra) forming strong Gaja-kesari yoga.

6. If three benefics stay in Kendra (Sri Narayana-sthana) houses, the person enjoys prosperity and happiness in life. Full moon is in birth lagnam; Mercury and Jupiter are in 7^th house.

7. Parivarthana (Exchange) yoga : Mercury is in Aquarius (lord Saturn); Saturn is in Gemini (lord is Mercury). This is Maha Suha yogam and will be beneficial to him and both their periods give him benefits.
