Horoscope Analysis of H.H. Swami Jnananandaji –
The Saint and the Scientist (1896 – 1969)
Part – 1 (Sept—25—2009) Friday
Usually, a person can be a saint or a scientist. But Swami Jnanandaji was a unique person; he was both a distinguished saint and a scientist. He did about 10 years of penance / meditation in Garwal region of Himalayas. He wrote many books on Sri Krishna and Philosophy and Hinduism in English. Later he went abroad and earned two Doctorate degrees, one from Prague University and the other from Liverpool University (U.K.), just with his background of high school education in Bhimavaram only. Later he migrated to USA during beginning of the second word war. He worked for over a decade in the nuclear physics research center at the Univeristy of Michigan in USA. He returned to India during 1948; and started Nuclear Physics Department in Andhra University in 1955. I joined the Department during July-1964 in M.Sc. course; I joined as a research student in 1964 under his guidance. I had personal contact with him as a scientist and as spiritual Guruji till his death during 1969. I now analyse his horoscope in nine parts as my tribute to him on the occasion of Bhagavthi Sri Saraswathi pooja days during Dasara Navarathri holy days!
Introduction His Holiness. Swami Jnanandaji was then the Head of the Department of Nuclear Physics, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. I joined the Department during July—1962 as a student of M.Sc. course. He was not teaching any classes for M.Sc. students. But he was guiding research students for Ph.D. He was much respected for his noble qualities of head and heart; for his self-discipline, exemplary conduct & character, and his punctuality . He was always kind, considerate and helpful to the students; but he was strict as far as discipline and conduct of students as well as teachers in the Department were concerned. Perfect discipline prevailed in the Department of Nuclear Physics during his regime as Head of the Department. He was our internal examiner officially for all the five papers in final year M.Sc. examinations. Also he was in viva-voce examination as internal examiner. He was very considerate and tried to encourage and reduce the examination fear of the students. Later I joined for research and got registered under Swamiji’s guidance. I was with him till his ten-years (1955—65) contract as Professor and Head of the Department expired during July—1965. Swamiji was continued as Professor Emeritus in the Department till his death. But I was shifted by the University authorities to work under Dr. V. Lakshminarayana, who took charge as the in-charge head of the department. Finally I got my Ph.D. Degree during 1970, under the guidance of Prof. V. Lakshminaryana garu (an eminent Professor of International reputation; he was the first student to get his D.Sc. degree award under the guidance of Swamiji). I had close personal contact with H.H.Swamiji till his death during September,1969. I deemed it was my good fortune to be associated with H.H.Swamiji, as my Guruji, both in science and general religion. So I like to explain his horoscope, as my tribute to H.H. Swamiji.

Later he went abroad and took two Doctorate degrees, one from Prague University and the other from Liverpool University (U.K.), just with his background of high school education in Bhimavaram only. He was much admired for his extraordinary brilliance as a scientist; he worked with world-renowned Nuclear Scientist Prof. James Chadwick, (Nobel-laureate and discoverer of neutron) and earned a Doctorate Degree under his guidance. Later he migrated to USA during beginning of the second word war. He worked for over a decade in the nuclear physics research center at the Univeristy of Michigan in USA. He returned to India, during Dec--1947. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, Prof.H.J.Bhabha, the then Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, Dr.A.S.Rao (the founder Director of Electronics Corporation of India at Hyderabad), Dr.B.V.Thosar, Director of Physics Group, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and many such eminent personalities were his close friends and his well-wishers. They extended their full support to the scientific and research endeavors of Swamiji and provided him several millions of rupees of research grants liberally, during 1955-66 period. He worked for some time as Assistant Director in National Physical laboratory; later he came to Visakhapatnam during 1955, on the invitation of Prof. V.S. Krishna, the then Vice-Chancellor of the Andhra University. He started Nuclear Physics department and worked as the Head of the Department and Goutami Professor, on contract basis for 10 years (1955-65), in Andhra University. Over 18 students completed their research and got D.Sc. Degrees under his guidance during 1956—68 period (all the three examiners of every thesis were renowned experts from U.K. / U.S.A / Germany some were Nobel-laurets; no internal examiners). He wrote two advance-level text books on Nuclear Physics (1960-64), and on Nuclear Models (1965-68) during this period (published by the Andhra University Press, Visakhapatnam). A book on him entitled “The Saint and The Scientist” was published by the University Resources Press, Washington, U.S.A in 1992. In 1982, the Nuclear Physics Department was given the name of Swami Jnananda Laboratories for Nuclear Research, to honour him.
