8) Mars : In Rasi chart, the third house (Virgo) has a malefic in it. The third house is the house of brothers. Mars is the signficator of brothers. In Nava amsa chart also the third house from Lagna has Mars in it. Rahu (a malefic) is in 3rd house from Moon. Due to these planetary combinations Jawaharlal had no brothers; He had only one sister Ms. Vijaya, much younger than him. Later she grew to eminence; she was Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. She was honoured with the President of U.N.0. General Assembly; she richly deserved this honour. Opinions of ancient expert saint-astrologers :-
Now I describe the effect of Mars (Angaraka) in third bhaava. Lagna-thrutheeye Kuja- phalam= Third house denotes mental inclination, ability, memory, intellect, inclination to study, courage, firmness, valour, prowess, heroism, younger brothers or sisters, cousins, neighbours, short travels, communications such as railways, wireless, posts and telegraphs, correspondence, writings, change of residence, signing contracts or agreements, rumours, carrying tales, hands, throat, shoulder blade, collarbone, arms and nervous system.
Effects : Views of renowned astrologers : 1) Saint-Astrologer Maharshi Parasara (Great grand-father of Pandavas and Kauravas of Mahabharatha epic; father of Maharshi Veda Vyasa) wrote : (sloka = Sanskrit verse) :- BHOOPA-PRASADO, UTHAMA-SOUKYAMUSCHAI, UDAARA, CHARU, PRAKRAMASCHA; DHANANICHA, BHRAATHRU-SUKHANCHA-SVALPAM, BHAVAE NARAANAAM , SAHAJAE, MAHEEJAE = IF A PERSON HAS KUJA IN THE 3RD HOUSE, THE PERSON LIVES A LUXURIOUS LIFE BY KING’S (RULER) PATRONAGE; HE IS GENEROUS; BRAVE & COURAGEOUS; MULTI-MILLINEER; & HE HAS VERY LITTLE HAPPINESS FROM BORTHERS; HE HAS VERY FEW BROTHERS / SISTERS.
2) Bhrigu Sutras- by saint-astrologer Maharishi Bhrigu (3500 BC):-- Suthra (16) :- Sva-sthree vyabhicharini; Suthra (17) :- subha-graha veekshithe, yuthe, na-dosha; anuja-heenaha; Suthra (18) :- dhana, dravya laabhaha; Suthra (19) :- Rahu, Ketu yuthe, vesya-sangamaha; Suthra (20) :- sahodara-dveshee; klesha-yuthaha; su-bhagaha; Suthra (21) :- alpa-sahodaraha; Suthra (22) :- paapa-graha yuthe, veekshithe sahodara-nashaha; Suthra (23) :- ucha, sva-kshethre, subha-graha yuthe sahodara deergha-ayuhu; dhairya, vikramavaan; Suthra (24) :- yudhe’ sooraha; Suthra (25) :- paapa-graha yuthe, mithra-kshethre, dhruthimaan = If Mars is in the third house, the native will have no younger brothers or sisters and the native's wife will be of questionable character but this will not happen if Mars is aspected by a benefic. He will also have financial gains. If Mars is associated with Rahu or Ketu, the native will have association with prostitutes. He will have inimical relations with his brothers and will face difficulties on that account. She / his wife will have a well- shaped female genital organ. He will have few brothers and sisters. If Mars is associated with or aspected by malefics, the native will suffer from loss of brothers (and sisters). If Mars is in his own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or is in his sign of exaltation (Capricorn), the brothers will be long-lived and the native will be patient and brave. He will prove very valourous in the battle-field. If Mars occupies a friendly house, the native will be courageous.
Explanation :- All the effects given above are appropriate and in accordance with the significations of the third house except those given in Sutras 16 and 20. According to Sutra 16, Mars in the third will make the wife of the native adulteress. The third house has nothing to do with wife and wife's character. This effect could be ascribed to Mars in the third house only if he were to be in conjunction with the lord of the seventh house or with Venus (who is a significator of wife, marital life and love affairs).
In Sutra 20 it is stated among other things that the wife of the native will have a well-shaped female organ. Our humble view is that this matter has nothing to do with the third house.
3) Brihath Jataka by Varhamihira (325 AC) :-- The person concerned will possess a good intellect and great strength. 4) Phala-deepika by Manthreswara :-- The native will be full of good qualities, wealthy, happy and valourous and he cannot be suppressed by any body. But the native will not be happy on account of his brothers (this can mean that he may have no brothers or the relations between him and his brothers may be inimical).
5) Saravali by Maha-Raja Kalyana Varma (10th century A.C; king of Vyaghrapaada kingdom) :-- The native will be valourous, unconquerable, without brothers, equipped with good qualities, healthy and famous.
6) Chamatkara Chintamani by Narayana Bhatt (5th century AC) :-- -The native will be valourous, wealthy (Wealth earned by valourous deeds) and unhappy on account of brothers and relatives.
7) Jataka Kalanidhi :- ANUJAM-NASTHI, DRAVYA-ABHAAVA, RAAHU-YUTHI-VYABHICHAARI, VESYA-LOLA, SAAHASIKA, BHAATHRU-HANTHA, BAHU-NISHTURAHA, JNAATHI-VRUDHI = When Mars (Kuja) is in 3rd house, he will not have brothers, very poor; if Kuja has association with Rahu, debaucherous, has intimate sexual relations with bitches (prostitutes), murders elder brothers, he is hated by all; his cousins / enemies will be more in number and they prosper.
My views :- The third house is an 'upachaya' house where malefics are said to give benefic results in accordance with the significations of the house. All the above authorities seem to have based their views on this principle. Mars is a significator of brothers. He is also a karaka for the third house. Mars in third is said to give ill effects in regard to brothers. This is perhaps due to 'Karako Bhava Nashaya' theory propagated by some of our ancient astrologers. But we strongly trust the view expressed by Bhrigu Sutras that all good effects in respect of brothers will be realised if Mars is in his own or in his sign of exaltation, or is under benefic influences, is very relevant, logical and correct in spite of the 'Karako Bhava Nashaya' theory.
