The planet Venus is known as SUKRA in Vedic astrology. Sukra means "white", or "bright" in Sanskrit. He is assigned feminine nature in vedic astrology. Venus is a first rate benefic in Jyotisha sastra (astrological predictions). She rules over the two zodiac houses of (Vrushabha) Taurus and Libra (Tula). Venus is exalted in Pisces (Meena) and her debilitation is in the opposite sign of Virgo (Kanya). Venus is a karaka, or significator of spouse, love, marriage, comfort, luxury, beauty, prosperity, happiness, all conveyances, art, dance music, acting, passion and sex, healing and the reciting of mantras.
Sage-astrolger Parasara says of Venus; "Venus is charming, has a splendors physique, is excellent or great in disposition, has charming eyes, is a poet, is phlegmatic and windy and has curly hair." Venus most powerful position is in the 4th house and beneficial in the TRIKONA Houses,(1, 5, or 9). Venus is a particularly beneficial planet for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants. Her nature is KAPHA, or watery in disposition.
Her gem is diamond and her metal is copper and silver. Venus' direction is Southeast and her day is Friday. She reaches full maturity at age 25. In Hindu mythology Venus, or Sukra, is a male and known as the Guru, or teacher of the ASURAS, or one of the two camps of the Hindu deities. Sukra therefore is a Brahmin, or the highest priestly order, and is considered the forefather of the Brig lineage of sages from ancient India.
Sukra bestows long life, wealth, happiness, children, and property and good education. He is the Guru for Asuras. Well learned in Neeti Sastras follower of such sastras and one who dispenses justice, Sukra is considered a beneficial Devata. He blesses the devotees with power to control one's Indriyas (Sense organs) and enables the devotee to obtain fame and name.
In the Zodiac, he is the Lord of Tula. Sukra takes one year to complete the Zodiac cycle staying one month in each Rasi. Fridays are considered to be effective for the worship of Sukra.

1) Thanu Bhaavam : SUKRA (VENUS) : BAHU KALA-KUSALO, VIMALOKTHIKRU, SU-VADANAA, MADANA ANUBHAVA PUMAAN; AVANI-NAYAKA, MAANA DHNA-ANVITHO, BHRUGU-SUTHAE THANU-BHAAVA GATHAE SATHI = If Sukra is in birth lagna (Thanu Bhaavam), the person is an expert in 3 or 4 different subjects / fields. He is resourceful, intelligent, scholar in literature, or fine arts. He / she has attractive face with lusture; he is handsome and fair. He is rich, prosperous and is respected by the ruler of the land / firm / institution. He leads a comfortable and happy life. He is short, hale and healthy. He is a renowned scientist or creative writer. He get a noble and loving wife. Mahatma Gandhi had Sukra in his birth-lagna, in Libra (own house). This is Malaveeya yoga, one of Maha-purusha (Great personality) yogas.

Let us examine this horoscope of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Mercury, Venus and Mars in Lagnam give him intense focus and very strong determination. Venus is in his own house and is in birth lagnam; this is Malaveeya yogam; this makes him passionate, possessive, aggressive, intense and a shrewd dealer. Sun in 12th house makes him offer cooperation, harmonious co-existence, and peaceful and non-violent nature. Saturn in 2nd house makes him devoid of riches and family life and enjoyment. Moon is in his own house and in 10th house makes him a ruler of the hearts and minds of millions of people; he was proud, fierce in his actions, and public leadership and support. He even sacrificed his earnings and own possessions. Mars is the lord of two death-causing houses 2nd and 7th and is in birth-lagnam. So he was assassinated and he died wounds caused by a weapon (fire-arm; pistol) on Jan-31-1948.
